Sailing | Volvo...Have a go!

This week 18 people went to Volvo Sailing... Have a go to participate in the sailing opportunity that was given by the instructors of the club; Steve, JR and Justin. First they taught us how to create our sail boat and explained what each part of the sail boat was used for in sailing. After we prepared to set off, we jumped into our boats and set sail.

The first activity we did was a race and we had to sail to the other side of the ocean in our boats by following a speedboat with JR in it. Students took turns riding on either a speedboat or the weta (a big sailboat) then we made our way back to shore for lunch. We sailed 3km away and back.

The second thing we did on the sailboats was retrieving toys. Justin used a speedboat to spread toys around the area and we had to sail towards them and retrieve them. There were balls, toy carrots, rubber ducks and water guns.

After retrieving the toys, news spread that if you tip your sailboat (purposely) then you will be able to get the certificate of sailing. After tipping our boat we had to turn it back over and get back onto it properly as soon as possible because of chances at catching hypothermia. We sailed back to shore afterwards and ended the trip.

Thanks to Rotary and Yatching NZ for making this trip possible for LS1 to participate.
