Commenting

LI: To post a positive comment

This week I commented on Charlize's blogpost about netball. She talked about the games she played and the rounds she won, lost and tied. Her blogpost was interesting because since I wasn't at netball, she explained it good enough to have an image of what happened!

You can find LS1's blog on the LS1 site. Just click on 'BLOGS' at the middle of the page and click on the name of a person to view their blog!

Basic Facts Boxes

LI: to remember basic maths facts.

This week I finished challenge 1 SPEED DEMON up to 20. I did the addition box and completed it. My time was 2 minutes and 33 seconds. The addition box equals up to 100 questions.

SSR Selfie 2019

LI: to summarise and retell a text.

Summarising a text means to use the information and give a brief explanation using the main points in a text. SSR Selfie let's us talk about a book that we had read. A book I have read is called 'The ABC with Honora Lee'. Its a story that reminds us again of the enduring alliance between the young and very old.

Maths | Proportion Facts | ASB | WIP

LI: To solve proportions.

This game tests your knowledge of Proportions. In this game, you need to focus and pay attention to the questions. My group finished 1 question and is a work in progress. We created a game testing the abilities and knowledge of proportions.

Swimming | Kiwi Sport | Water Safety | YMCA

LI: To learn about water safety.

The year fives from LS1 swam at the YMCA lagoon pool to learn about water safety. In James's group, we did Freestyle, Back stroke & Endurance swimming as a rerun through.

Freestyle
We had to kick in the water and rotate our arms in circles and once we did 3 arm circles then we had to tilt on or side to breathe. We had to make it to the end and back of the lane.

Back Stroke
Like Freestyle, we have to kick on our backs and do arm circles. Our hands have to come up out of the water with our thumbs facing up, and rotate it so that our thumbs wouldn't be the first thing to hit the water when we did arm circles. We needed to keep our fingers together and our arms straight.

Endurance Swimming
We were allowed to do any type of swimming method. First we had to do 16 meters of swimming and then we had to do a full lane of any type of swimming without stopping or touching the floor.

Writing | Advertisement | Persuasive Tools

LI: To learn about persuasive tools in advertising

We had to, as a group, fill in one of the four 'Analysing a Print Advertisement' depending on which of the colours our group was. We also had to finish the Key Vocabulary. My group did the definitions of Service, Demographic, Target audience & message. We needed to answer the questions on the Analysing slides using the photos.

Once we finished the Key vocabulary & Analysing slides, we had to ask the other groups for the answers of the other analysing slides because we hadn't done more than one analysing slide. There were two slides that we had to do individually. They were the FedEx slide and the Pringles Analysing

Inquiry | Rube Goldberg | Pulleys

LI: To learn about pulleys

A pulley is a rope and a wheel which is used to lift and lower objects and loads. In groups again, we needed to answer the questions shown on this document about the pulley. We did an experiment that we did with rope and 2 sticks. 1+ person holding onto the stick horizontally and the same on the other stick. A rope was tied in the middle of a stick and a loop that went under the other and back to the other side. We experimented the measurement of the results and the effects.

Reading | Questioning | Synthesis | Too much technology

LI: To separate fact from opinion

This week, each group read a different article and fill in the Synthesis boxes. In the prior knowledge box, we had to explain what we already knew linking to the topic of the article. In the new information box, it had to include an explanation of new information or facts that we learned after reading the article. In the new understandings, we had to summarise new understandings that we understood or a summary of a mix of the "New information" and "Prior knowledge" boxes. My group did an article called "Too much technology".

For the questioning google draw, we needed to answer 10 different questions which the answers link to 4 different areas; Right there, Think and search, Author and me & on my own. We had to arrange the answers into the right area depending on how the answer is found. For example: If a question is "What is the authors topic" and the answer says in the text "I will be talking about technology" then we have to put the answer as "right there" because the answer is right there in the text.

Then we had to make a small script to record a flip grid response talking about if we do or don't agree to the authors point of view and why using the synthesis research.

Kiwican | Resilience | Self Control | Distractions

LI: to focus more (avoid distractions)

We learned how to focus and avoid getting distracted. Distracted means to fall out of focus or take notice something. Many things can distract us, some like; Talking or physically annoying another and/or each other. To learn about distractions, we played a game called Distraction Circle.

Activity - Distraction Circle
Distraction circle is played in groups of people. One person in the group stands in the middle of the other people. One at the front, two or more people at the sides and one or more person at the back. The person in the middle of the circle CANNOT turn around or rotate.

The person facing the person in the middle, had to come up with actions for the person in the middle to copy. The people on the right side of the person in the middle had to come up with a story to tell to the person standing in the middle. On the left, the person had to come up or sing a song. At the back, the person had to draw numbers on the back of the person in the middle.

This helped us learn about distractions by how we had to pay attention to as much as we could and stay on task. If we got distracted and fail to do one of the four things than that would count as being distracted because we fell out of focus to pay attention to something else.

Kiwisport | Swimming | Water Safety

LI: to learn water safety and land rescues

Water safety is important to know because it will help and save you in a lot of situations. Water safety includes knowing how to swim. What we learnt in swimming lessons today was how to rescue people.

Land Rescues
Some people stumble into the wrong situations which lead them to drown. Land rescues helps by when somebody is drowning close to the land but can't reach, you can grab something that floats that can reach out to them and either throw it or stretch far enough that they will be able to latch on and you can pull them in.

We practised this in partners or groups of three with water noodles. One person had to be on the outer edge of the pool laying on their stomach facing inwards to the pool with a noodle. The other person/two people had to be facing the person with the noodle further back. The people/person in the pool had to call for help (Putting our arms up straight and yelling help) and the rescuer would hold onto one end the try reach the noodle out so that the people/person in the pool could grab onto it. Once the people/person had grabbed onto the noodle, the rescuer would pull them in and save them. Each person had a turn in the water.

Proper and improper rescuing
Do not jump into the water to save somebody immediately. This is because if you do not have anything to help rescue somebody or if you jump in as soon as they call for help, you could swim towards them and they would use you to float. This would cause them to be able to breath, but cause you to drown underwater.

To properly save somebody, you need to have an item that can float and use it to save them by throwing it out to them so they can reach and pulling them in or try calming them and doing the same to help save them.

Kiwican | Resilience | Self Control | Self Discipline

LI: to develop self control & self discipline

Resilience means to commit to your challenges and bouncing back. Self control means to take control and responsibility of yourself and the things you do.

We were learning about what situations we can use resilience and self control and what would happen if we didn't control and take responsibility of our actions. As always, Kiwi can provides a game which links to the theme and/or topic. That game we played was; Coping challenges.

Activity - Coping challenges
There were 4 different challenges and 4 different groups and we had to complete each challenge in one minute. The challenges were: Writing the alphabet backwards from Z, Linking Maori and English colours, Using the catchphrase to make new actions and 5x Push ups, 5x Pull ups, 5x Squats and 5x Burpees.

This activity was hard because we had little time to complete medium-to-large tasks. We got through these challenges by working as a team and attempting to complete it.

We used resilience in this game by trying and coping to do these challenges and when we made mistakes we tried again.

Catchphrase- "Kiwi Can says, Control yourself, don't shout, Kiwican, Over and out"

Theme- Resilience

Topic- Self Control & Self Discipline

Cybersmart | Print Design Rules | Fix the Poster

LI: to apply the print design rules

There are 4 areas of the Print Design rules. They are; Composition, text, colour and layout. Our task for cyber smart was to fix the bad versions of the print design rules and arrange and mend them into a good version of the Print design rules.

Composition
The balance of text and images and the usage of spacing or empty areas.

Text
This controls the colour of the text, the style (Boldness etc), the font and the size of the text.

Colour
The usage of colour and the notice if they clash or if the colours don't go well together.

Layout
Where everything is layed out upon the DLO.

The print design rules help by guiding and directing us to make mistakes and learn from them. The Print design rules are used to help sustain the needed amount of things on a DLO or working template.

Inquiry | Incline Plain | S.T.E.A.M | Rube Goldberg

LI: To develop knowledge of the Incline Plane

An Incline plane is an angle with one side lower than the other and is used to transport objects and more. We had to use toy cars and use Incline Planes to see how the toy car would react in action going down an Incline Plane.

There were tests using Incline Planes to see how it would make things easier to carry etc. We had to see how the Incline Plane would make it easier to carry a person in the class. Ong, Chris, etc. (Light people).

In partners/groups, we had to complete this draw explaining Inclined Planes, why Incline Planes make it easier to move things and an example of an Incline Plane in our everyday lives.

Writing | 2019 Speech/Poem finals | Persuasive speeches | Junior Poems

LI: To create a persuasive speech

Today, the speech/poem winners presented their pieces to the whole school of PBS and a guest judge, Mr Stevenson. The junior school presented a poem to the school and the seniors developed and wrote a persuasive speech stating their opinion and belief and try to persuade the school. There were 12 students presenting their poem/speech.

My favourite speech was by Fau. Her speech was about others mental health and how we should take notice of how others feel, not only the people we know but strangers too. She spoke about how we should care for others feelings and greet them with a welcoming smile or a compliment to brighten their day.

My favourite poem was spoken by Micaela. Micaela is a new entry student from room 6. Her poem that she presented was the Humpty Dumpty poem. The reason why she presented my favourite poem of the junior winners was because she spoke with the voice of confidence and we could hear her voice clearly. As a new entry student she presented it really well for somebody as young as her.

Reading | Ihumatao

LI: To identify the main ideas in a text

Ihumatao
The Fletcher's wanted permission to build housing on Ihumatao land but their request was refused. Ihumatao is ancient and sacred land to Maori ancestry. This has become a big situation and problem worldwide which has included the Government and other important parties. Protesters have been involved with this situation and have been protecting and trying to prevent the Fletcher's building on the land. Jacinda Ardern claims and says that the government has been trying to look for a solution to this.

Our Task
We needed to complete the last slide on the Ihumatao DLO about what we believe and talking about our opinion of the Ihumatao problem. We had to state 3 points to back up our opinion and say of our Ihumatao beliefs. The conclusion had to include a statement/summary to explain and back up what we are saying and stating about the Ihumatao and talking about why people should take the side we chose. (Not a persuasive piece)

Kiwican | Resilience | Emotions

L:I To Learn about Self Control and Self disciplines

Engineer      Our Engineer was called Head shoulder nee es and toes. For this game we had to be in partners my partner was Salina  so our kiwi can teacher said Head Shoulder nee es and toes but when he say toes there is a cone in the middle of us and you have try and grab the cone before your other partner does.

Activity Our Activity was Emotions acting we had to working groups in my groups was Charlize,Fau,Hosea,Sione T, Andrew, and me. Our card said two friends are having an argument about something. That something was that one of the friends stole from the shop and there were two costumers buying something then the other friend said not to do it because it was bad so she said sorry.
Catch Phrase Kiwi can says, control your self ,don't shout ,kiwi can over and out.

Inquiry | Rube Goldberg | Wheel and axle | Levers

LI: to learn about the wheel and axle

Rube Goldberg was a famous american cartoonist and inventor. He created machinery like the wheel and axle. We needed to fill in a google draw with a car experiment and a lever experiment. With the car experiment, we needed to test out the different distances it went on different materials standing on its wheels and on its side. With the lever experiment, we needed to make our own contraption to lift or carry an object with a pivot point.

We needed to create a wheel and axle with the same partner from Tuesday to follow the instructions and make a SPINNING wheel and axle contraption.

Reading | Ihumatao

LI:  To Identify the main ideas in a text.

In reading, we learnt more about the Ihumatao and filled in more of the slide. I want to appreciate the ancient and historic maori land and leave it to be free from any housing or estates built on top of it by any housing company.

Writing | OREO Speech | Formal Presentation

LI: Present a formal speech

We needed to present a formal and persuasive speech persuading others to believe our opinion. Thinking of a topic, we had to create a persuasive speech plan to present to all of the group to persuade them to believe our opinion. The maximum time limit was 3 minutes 10 seconds. My topic was about Judgement and my time was 2 minutes 34 seconds.

Maths | Ratio Problems | Tutorial

LI: To learn and look after money by creating with maths

Ratios
A ratio is a relation between two or more amounts showing the number of times one value contains or is contained within in the other. We needed to make a slide about Ratios and how to solve them. A whole ratio, is including a base or the linking item/other that it is interacting with. Still don't understand? Here's an example: There is 2 pieces of pizza on one plate. What is the ratio? The ratio for it is 2:1. The 2 representing the pieces of pizza and the 1 representing the plate.

How did we learn about ratios?
We needed to watch, listen and understand the explanation given by Mr Wong to tell us about the Ratios. He gave examples and explanations of what a Ratio is so we understood and were able to complete the task.

Cybersmart | Print Design Rules | C-L-C-T

LI: to identify the four areas of print design

The print design rules are; Composition, Layout, Colour and Text. The print design rules explain what will catch audience's attention and what is to be used when making a good piece of work. Examples are shown on the slide with either a thumbs up or thumbs down depending on if its shows bad C, L, C or T

Composition
Having a good composition means you have an equal balance of text and photos/images. Having bad composition, means there are unequal amounts of images and photos on the same DLO.

Layout
A good layout include aligning on a DLO and how big the text is, the image size and how much space is used. Bad layout shows unaligned media or other, like text or images on the DLO. If not much space has been used and there is lots of clear empty space in the middle or in your DLO, it becomes a bad layout.

Colour
Good colour uses colours that work well together. The colours include the text colour, DLO template colour and all things on the DLO that include colour. Bad colour is when you use to many clashing colours and too many bright, enraging colour formulas. Clashing meaning when it hurts your eyes or when you have to much bad colours together. Example:

Text
Good text includes, minimum different fonts, text colour, text size and if the text is relevant to the topic. If the text is easy to read and differs from the background colour. A light background and a light coloured text makes it hard to read. If every different piece of text has a different font and size, it wont merge and look good together.

Kiwisport | Swimming

LI: To learn water safety and develop swimming methods.

Swimming is helpful for survival and in swimming lessons with James today, we did 4 different swimming tactics for survival.  They were:
  • Streamline
  • Streamline and roll for breath
  • Kicking on back
  • Breast stroke & survival stroke
Streamline
To do a swimming streamline, you need to put your hands together and put your arms up above your head. Try not to kick off to start. Kick your legs with your face down in the water and keep your arms straight forward while you kick.

Streamline and roll for breath
To do a streamline breath roll, you have to do a streamline, but after 6 kicks or 3 arm strokes you need to roll on your side and take a breath. We had to rotate our whole body to the side and not sway our head in the water.

Kick on back
We needed to float on our back and kick to the end. This is used for emergencies or people who struggle to use arms.

Breast stroke & Survival stroke
Lay on your back, and fold your legs to your chest, and push them out in a circled rotating form. Then scull your arms.

Inquiry | Rube Goldberg | 5 W's and the H | Character Biography

LI: To learn about the man behind the machines

We needed to write about the cartoonist and inventor Rube Goldberg or Reuben Garrett Lucius Goldberg. In groups of 6, we wrote the biography including the 5 W's and the H. We included some photos of his inventions with attributions or as label for reuse.

When we finished the slide, we needed to make our own Rube Goldberg Human Machine. We had to form into a group of 12 with another group to complete our Human Rube Goldberg Machine. Our goal was too make a machine that started from behind the benches at the wall and we needed to go OVER the benches (We werent allowed to go around) and we had to make a mechanism to open the door. (View the last slide for our group machine video)

Maths | Equivalent Fractions

LI: To learn to look after money by creating with maths

This week we had to assign a new job for the week. My groups chose to do Equivalent fractions as a tutorial to show and help you understand more about Equivalent fractions. Follow the instructions as on on the slide to learn about equivalent fractions.

OJC | The Lion King Jr. | Preformance

We went to visit Ormiston Junior College to experience a performance by year 7-10. The play was 2 hours long and included 24 stage actors and 25 music, stage and light producers.

The Director - Ryan
Ryan is the Director/Producer of Disney/The Lion King Jr. He guided all 57 (excluding the director and principal) of the actors and producers to create this play. The costumes and film-display were interesting and they were all provided by Ryan.

The Principal - Luke
The Principal of OJC, Luke, provided alot of permission towards us to watch it before the opening night. Our related experience with acting and play performances had given us the permission to enter and watch the Lion King Jr before the opening night and as an audience practice before it happened.

My favorite character in the play was Rafiki because her singing was very on point in the beginning and her parts within the 2 hour play were amazing and accurate to how Rafiki is animated in the Lion King movie.

Kiwisport | Swimming Tactics

ee

LI: To learn different ways to survive and swim in water

In James's group, we learned 4 different ways to swim. Each with a different purpose of survival. The 4 different ways were:

  • Streamline kicking
  • Freestyle
  • Rolling from front to back (6 count)
  • Dolphin Dive

Swimming Streamline
To do a swimming streamline, you need to put your hands together and put your arms up above your head. Try not to kick off to start. Kick your legs with your face down in the water and keep your arms straight forward while you kick.

Freestyle
To do freestyle, you have to get into the Swimming streamline position but when in the water, instead of just kicking you need to move your arms slowly in circles while in the water. Make sure to keep your head down in the water and if you need to breathe, push your head to the side enough to get a pathway of oxygen into you.

Rolling from front to back (6 count)
Lay in the water floating on your back and kick. It is optional but you can move your arms like in a freestyle on your back. After counting 6 kicks or seconds, roll to the other side (back side up) and start doing streamline until you reach 6 kicks or seconds then turn. Repeat until you are at your swimming goal.

Dolphin Dive
When in the water, push your body up and down and when you go up, bop up ontop of the water to catch a breath. Swim in the water with your arms straight down your side and after 5 seconds you can catch a breather again until you reach your goal.

Kiwican | Emotions

LI: To understand emotions

It is important to understand emotions and how other people feel so that you can support them in the right ways. We learned about different emotional meanings and how in some situations your actions can affect other peoples feelings.

Energizer - Emotional Intensity
2 people have one card that says an emotion. etc sad and had to find other people that link with the same feeling. For example: Sad and depressed link together. After finding all four or more people that link with your emotion, we had to put the feelings together on the floor leveled how intense it was. Example: Smiling, happy, giggling and laughing would be the intensity level for the positive feelings.

Activity - Roleplay (Different feelings)
In groups, we were given a card we had to read. The card involved a situation and we had to act it out like a play. Each situation was based on a specific type of emotion, like confused for example. There were 5 acts/roleplays.

Reading | Ihumatao | Timeline

LI: To identify the main ideas in a text.

This week we had finished four more slides as a group on the Ihumatao event. We had read articles and watched videos to find out the information about when it happened. We had listed them in chronological order of the timeline. We found the information from Otago Daily Times and a videos from 1 News. We added the recent news about the Ihumatao.

Inquiry | MOTAT | STEAM | PBS School Trip

LI: To learn about technology and transportation.

MOTAT stands for, Museum of transport and technology. PBS senior students rode to MOTAT
To learn about STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). Before we
could begin, we were given the chance to explore around MOTAT. We discovered tons of olden-day methods of transport, communication and buildings with old artifacts.

Flash Light Constructing
Returning to the Mind Lab, Emma gave us a small task before we could start constructing.
We had to connect an LED light to a motor which had a cogwheel that we could spin/turn in
order to gather enough energy that the LED light would turn on. There were two holes on the
top sides of the motor where we had to put the LED wires in too connect it to the motor. Once we successfully formed light with the LED we were able to construct our base and flashlight body with the building materials. We had the option of Axles, Rubber tips (For the Axles), White tips (To hold the Axles), platforms/walls and smaller + L shaped items. We had 30+ minutes to complete this task in groups of three. We needed to construct a system where we could turn the LED light on without having to turn the cogwheel.

Electric Cars
When we rotated, we changed to an activity where we had to build our own electric cars that ran on batteries. Kenza explained that cars can also run on batteries. This gave us an opportunity to create electric cars using batteries, a fan/propeller, cardboard, plastic wheels, battery holders, skewers, tape, and scissors. There was a prototype example of a fully completed electric car. Given the example, we partnered up and collaborated to create a fully operating electric car. The motor also had two holes on the top sides of it. One hole was for a negative wire and the other was for a positive wire. The battery holder had 2 wires on it, black and red. One of the wires was a negative wire which had to connect to the negative hole and a positive for the + hole on the motor.

Emma, Kenza and Damon/Damen from MOTAT taught us and explained to us information about STEAM, technology, and transportation.

Maths | Fraction of sets | Tutorial

LI: To learn and look after money by creating with maths.

This tutorial will show you how to understand and solve equations involving fractions of sets. My group created a tutorial that could teach you how to understand fractions of sets better. This tutorial includes fractional information and a pathway of your choices. It doesn't matter whether you get it right or wrong because you have the options to go back and try again.

Fractions as Parts of a Whole. The whole is divided into a number of equal parts. The number under the fraction bar tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into and is called the denominator.

Reading | Ihumatao

LI: To learn what happened in Ihumatao

We spoke about a big situation that happened and is currently happening in NZ. Ihumatao is an agreement between Maori people, government, Fletchers, British government and Police. Fletchers want to build over 400 houses on maori spiritual land.

We had to fill in defintions, locations, distance and what happend on 4 slides. What happened was that the Fletchers company attempted to build on maori land where people cherished their ancestors land because it created SOUL. SOUL stands for, Save, our, unique, land. SOUL is (currently) protesting against Fletchers in Mangorei.
