Commenting

LI: To comment positivly

This week I commented on Sulia's Blogpost about the explanation and procedure of learn, create, share! I commented on her because I did the same task and I wanted to give feedback on how she did.

Basic Facts Boxes

LI: to remember basic maths facts.

This week, I completed only 4 basic facts boxes addition up to 10. I did the speed demon challenge and my time was 1 minute and 39 seconds. There are images on the slide as my proof.

SSR Selfie 2019

LI: to summarise and retell a text.

This week I completed my SSR Selfie on a book called Guardians of Ga'hoole 'Rise of a legend' by Kathryn Lasky. This book is about owls tale of the invasion on Kielian League, Ezylryb, Bylyric and the Ice Talons. These are groups of different owls with different backstories living different lives. All except one owlet...The Stormfast Island Hatchling.

This book was interesting because I love owls and their personalities. This is a New York Times Best selling series. Evan Weaver inspired Kathryn Lasky to write this book. You can find it in the fiction section of our library under LAS because they are the first three letters in the authors last name.

Maths | Capacity | Calculation | Measurement

LI: To measure and work out different capacities.

Capacity is how much something can hold. For example, I have a cup of water. The capacity is how much water the cup can hold. The cups capacity is 160 Millilitres.

This week, we were focusing on calculating capacity. We had to use the DLO/template given by Mr Wong and we had to measure 8 different containers to see the capacity of them. The 8 objects were; A glass cup, a plastic cup, a bottle cap, A detergent spoon, Cleaner Alcohol, Pills container and a small lunch container.

Afterwards we (as a group) had to answer 6 questions for 3 different maths problems. Those 6 questions were:

1. What does the problem want you to figure out?

2. What do you already know?

3. To solve the problem what do you need on step (or more)?

4. What was the maths operation?

5. What was the initial and agent number?

6. Write a number sentence and solve the given question.

Reading | Theatre | Kebabs | Reflection

LI: To build vocab & Expression

This week we performed our second play in the theatre. We had to perform in front of the rest of Mr Ogilvie's reading groups. For our blogpost we have to write a reflection answering the questions that Mr Ogilvie has given us.

1. What did you enjoy the most?
I enjoyed rehearsing with my group to practice our lines because I got to memorise my lines by saying them over and over without having to read off the screen.

2. What was the most difficult part?
The most difficult part for me during reading was when we had to perform in the hall in front of Mr Ogilvie so that he could check how much progress we had done. It was difficult for me because I had not remembered half of my lines which made it harder for me to express them.

3. What would you change in the future?
What I would change in the future is the money operation because people live without a roof over their head because they dont have enough money to pay for protection. I would also change the moral of plays to positive meanings and morals.

4. Do you think your oral language improved?
Yes I do. This is because when I did my first play I didn't include much expression but now I include enough expression to portrait my character in plays.

5. What things would help if your teachers did them?
Some things that would help me are: Examples and Explanation of Information. Examples means that it would help me if I could get an example of the finished task result. Explanation of Information means to get a brief explanation of the task given to me.

Kiwi Sport | Gymnastics

LI: To practice flexibility

This week we had another 3 rotations for us to switch to practice different gymnastics skills in groups during the session. The different rotations were focusing on: Rolls/Jump strength, beam flexibility and our 3 supports and balance.

Rotation 1:

Forward roll - Aim: To do a forward roll on a box landing standing up.

Beam balance - Aim: To jump onto the beam (like a frog or rabbit) and walk sideways to the end.

Bunny hops - Aim: To bunny hop on the different sides of the beam.

Cartwheel - Aim: To do a cartwheel on the blue mat on the stage.

Rotation 2:

Backwards roll - Aim: Perform a backwards roll on a slope or on the floor.

Trampoline - Aim: Taking a running start, we had to run and do a straight jump onto the mat on that stage. Then doing a forward roll on the mat. Once done, do a dive roll in the air. (Running, jumping and in the air put your arms out in front of you like superman and roll when landing).

Combo - Aim: To do a cartwheel, backwards roll and straddle, candlestick and then handstand.

Rotation 3:

Parallel bars - Aim: Lift our legs off the ground and our feet touching our back-sides so that from our chest down is straight swinging.

Handstand - Aim: Do a handstand off the wall using a wooden support for our arms to hold.

Bars - Aim: To do front support on bars without our stomach touching the bars and swinging our legs and far back as we can without letting go or falling.

Front, Back, Side support - Aim: To do front, back & side support on a mat on the floor.

Reflection:
I enjoyed this weeks gymnastics lesson because we got to do a combo and it was fun.

Inquiry | Collaboration | LS1 & LS2 | Earth, Space and Beyond

LI: To activate our prior knowledge about science, earth and beyond

This week LS2 and LS1 collaborated to activate and build our prior knowledge about science, space and planets within and out of our solar system. On a slide, we had to write as much as we knew about the 6 topics on the slide:

 How does space effect us?

What do you know about the sun?

What do you know about the moon?

What do you know about space? What do you know about science?

How much do you know about the planets in our solar system?

We had to write as much information as we could with our understanding of these 6 questions. On the last slide we had to write as many words that we know are linked to space. For example: Gravity, Force and Stars.

Writing | Learn, Create, Share | Explanation & Procedure

LI: To use key vocab to unlock sentence & text structure.

This week, our task was to write an explanation of how and why LS1 Learns, Creates and Shares. We also had to write a procedure including instructions step by step how LS1 learns, create and share. An explanation tells how and/or why something happens. A procedure is a text explaining how to do something.

This was in pairs. Using a google doc, we had to write both explanation and procedure of how we operate around learning, creating and sharing. The structure of an explanation is TIMES. (Title, Introdction, Meaningful Information, Example, Summary). The structure of a procedure is TEMPS. (Title, Example, Materials, Pictures, Steps).

Cybersmart | Meme | Collaboration

LI: to collaborate on a task

Collaboration means a group of people work together to finish work/achieve a task. In pairs, we had to collaborate to make a meme about collaboration. We had to take a photo relating to the topic of collaboration and use text to say something about it.

Our meme is about how collaboration is not always easy to do, but we still should do it always. This took us a few minutes (7 minutes max) and we planned our idea to be connective and forming positive relationships with eachother.  It is not easy to collaborate, but we should anyway, time or day.

Commenting

LI: To comment a positive comment.

This week I decided to comment on Sulia's blogpost about her trip to Stardome. Her blogpost included detail about what she learnt and the activities that she had done. You can find her blogpost on the LS1 site, click on the button that says "blogs" and it will take you to a site with students names on them. Clicking on one will take you to that persons blog!

Maths | Volume | Measurement

LI: to measure water displacement and calculate volume.

This week, we measured the volume of shapes put into water to see how the water changes when something is put into it. Volume means how much something can hold. For example a container is 4x10. It can hold 67ml of water. The volume of the container (holding water) is 67ml. My group had to calculate how much the water changed when a different shape was added and pushed down into the water.

Maori | Patupaiarehe

LI: To create a slideshow explaining patupaiarehe

This week, we had to make a slideshow about patupaiarehe answering the following questions.
1. What are patupaiarehe?
2. What are they afraid of?
3. What are their special powers?
Our slideshow was made for the juniors in rm 1-3. Our information had to be made sure that it was suitable for the juniors and that they would be able to understand. For me this was a challenge because I was not used to writing without big words or words that the juniors could not understand. Although I found this a challenge, I still enjoyed this task and I am proud of how it turned out.

Kiwisport | Gymnastics

LI: To develop body movement of balance, rotation & strength.

This week we had another session of gymnastics with Steven. We had another rotation for us to practice our flexibility, muscles and gymnast skills. Each rotation had a different purpose linking to gymnastics.

Stretches:
1. L Shape
2. Seal
3. Butterfly
4. Cat
5. Straddle
6. Back, Front, Side support

The First Rotation: In the first part of the rotation, there were 4 different things for us to test our gymnastic skills. They were:

1. Beam - Aim: Walk to the on the beam, when reaching the middle perform a jump and then continue walking forward without falling off.

2. Dive Roll - Aim: Kneeling on the edge of the stage, we had to reach our arms towards the ground without falling off. Then we kicked our legs and rolled off the stage onto the mat.

3. Bench - Aim: A forward roll on top of the bench and land standing up at the end.

The second rotation: In this second rotation there were also 4 different objects/things that we had to use.

1. Trampoline - Aim: To run and jump onto the trampoline. Perform a straight jump in the air and land in landing position. Then do a forward roll with the remaining space in front.

2. Backwards roll - Aim: To do a backwards roll and land standing up as the result.

3. The 3 Handstands - Aim: To do 3 different handstands. The first one, we had to kick one leg into the air and try to stay stable in that position. The second one, we had to just do a normal handstand and the third one we had to do a tuck handstand. We had to tuck our legs into our chest and hold out body up.

4. Jump-pad - Aim: Take a running start to jump onto the jump-pad and do a 360 turn and land in the landing position.

The third rotation: In this third rotation, we had 4 more different things to test our knowledge and skills of gymnastics. Those four things were:

1. Handstand - Aim: Do a handstand against the wall holding onto a horizontal wooden stick that was supporting where we held.

2. Front support - Aim: To do a front support and pull our legs as far up as possible behind us without our body touching the support.

3. Parallel bars - Aim: Use the parallel bars to test your muscle strength and flex your legs out in the air. Making sure that our hands are in the middle (not on either ends of the parallel bars) we had a choice of 3 different shapes to do on the parallel bars. They were either: tuck (to simply lift your legs above the ground), L shape (to put our legs our in front of us in a straight position) and Straddle (with our legs apart in the air and holding position)

4. Back, Front, Side Support - Do Back, front, side support on a the hexagon shaped equipment. Having our legs on top of the box and our arms on the mat switching supports.

This week we attempted to gain more strength and flexibility in gymnastics. My favourite thing of this session was the Trampoline and the Backwards roll in rotation 2. The part I found the hardest was the Parallel bars because we had to try and lift our legs up into the air either Tuck, L or straddle.

Reading | Flipgrid | Theatre

LI: To build vocabulary and expression

This week, we had to create a flipgrid including what our group play was about and perform a line or two in the video portraiting the character we play as in the play. I play as a character called Mullah Nasruddin. In the play he has 19 lines total and he is a major character in the story. My flipgrid.

Writing | Explanation | How is chocolate made?

LI:To order parts of an explanation

This week, we had to write an explanation on the process of how chocolate treats are made. There are 6 steps in the process and we needed to explain each process with a google document and a google draw.

On the google draw we had to create a poster showing which step goes in which place in making chocolate. On the document we had to write an explanation of each step and what it is.

Cybersmart | Fomal & Informal Language

LI: to identify what formal and informal language is.

Informal speech means casual conversation vocabulary. Formal speech is usually using manners while in conversations. Formal speech is used when you are talking to somebody who has a higher rank than you, like either the king or queen. In that situation you would more likely use Formal speech. Informal speech is used normally everyday. You probably use Informal speech when you are talking to your friends ect.

We had to write down 5 informal and formal speech for a situation. We had to write the informal and formal ways of speaking in a sentence. This helps us when we are commenting or giving feedback.

Kiwi Can | Integrity | Responsibilities

LI: Doing things without being asked

Topic: Responsibility
Theme: Integrity
Catch-Phrase: Kiwi Can Says, Responsible is what I am, that's the way of Kiwi Can.

This week we introduced a new topic called Responsibility. Responsibility means to be a role model around others and do good things that affect others positively.

Activity:
Using skipping ropes, balance a ball in the middle. - Responsibility is used in this by working together. Once it was balanced, perform a simple task. Walk it to the window without the ball dropping.

How did we define it?:
We spoke as a group about the different responsibilities we have to define what responsible is. We had a conversation about how we saw responsibilities as and the different places we could show responsibility.

Commenting

LI: To comment positively.

This week I commented on Fau's Blogpost about a lesson of Gymnastics with Steven. She included detail on how to do the different stretches that she did in gymnastics and included information on the rotations in her session.

You can find her blog on the LS1 Site. Click on the button that says blogs and it will take you to a site where it has links to all the students in LS1's Blogpost.

Basic Facts Boxes | Challenges | Equations | Speed Demon

LI: to remember basic maths facts

This week I completed addition basic facts boxes within 3 minutes. My total and exact time was 2 minutes and 17 seconds. I did the speed demon challenge up to 10. Next time I will attempt to do up to 20 within 3 minutes.

SSR Selfie 2019

LI: To summarise and retell a text.

Today, I completed a retell of the story 'The Fall'. This book was written by Tristan Bancks which is also the author of 'Two Wolves'. The main characters in this story are Sam and Harry. Sam has a dog named Magic. Harry is a crime reporter and is also Sam's father.

Sam sees somebody falling off the side of a balcony. Pushed, Sam thinks. But somebody has seen Sam. He has to stay alert and keep cautious otherwise his next twenty-four hours, could be his last.

Cybersmart | SMART Commenting

LI: To post a positive comment.

This week I decided to comment on Charlize's Play Table Mat on her blog. Her blogpost included all 5 things that you need in a blogpost. 1. Title 2. Labels 3. DLO 4. Blurb 5. Learning Intention. Our cybersmart task was to comment a positive comment on somebody elses blog in our class.

You can find LS1 Students blogs on the LS1 Site. At the bottom, click the one that says blogs and it will take you to a site with all the LS1 Students blog links.

Maths | Addition | Subtraction | Adding in parts | Compensating | Algorithm | Place Value

LI: To practise figuring out word problems in addition and subtraction.

This week, we had to complete 7-8 maths problems using four different stradegies. Algorithm, Place value, Adding in parts and/or compensating. In this document I had completed all to the number 7.

They had to include: 1. A drawing of the equation 2. A small explanation of what the equation was asking you to do 3. The numbers that we were to use when solving the equation 4.The stradegy and method used to work out the question 5. Telling the answer in a small sentence.

Inquiry | Newton's Third Law | Forces

LI: What is a force and how can we harness it

This week, our focus was on Newton's third law of gravity and force. My group and I created a slideshow showing four different types of force and gravity: Action force, Reaction force, Air Resistance, Gravitational Force. I did Reaction force, Sulia did Action force, Farzana did Air resistance and Fau did Gravitational force.

Writing | Cause and Effect | Casual Language

LI: What is cause and effect?

This week, we have been learning about cause and effect. We created a slideshow showing 10 different cause and effects linking to what happens in LS1. They had to be what students could control in LS1, for example; It started to rain, LS1 stayed inside. We couldn't control the weather so this was not an option to use. First comes the cause, then is the effect. Between the two is the casual language that links the cause and effect together making a sentence. Here is an example. Cause: LS1 was loud Casual Language: As a result Effect: The teachers got mad.

Cause
Something that happens that effects the end result. There are 10 examples on this slideshow that links to how LS1 works. Cause is an event/action or other that happens and that ends with an effect on something else.

Effect
The ending result of something that happens after a cause. The effect is what happens when something is done or the result after the cause is done/made/happened.

Kiwisport | Gymnastics |

LI: To develop body movement of balance, rotation & strength.

This week we had another session of gymnastics with Steven. We had another rotation for us to practice our flexibility, muscles and gymnast skills. Each rotation had a different purpose linking to gymnastics.

Stretches:
1. L Shape
2. Seal
3. Butterfly
4. Cat
5. Straddle
6. Back, Front, Side support

The First Rotation: In this first part in the rotation, there were 4 different things for us to do in this rotation. They were:

1. Beam - Aim: Walk backwards on the beam without having to look behind you. Each time we had to step backwards we had to navigate for the end of the beam so that we would know when to jump off.

2. Box - Aim: Do a cartwheel and/or bunny jumps over the box. Our hands had to be on the box while we jumped.

3. Bench - Aim: A forward roll on top of the bench and landing standing up at the end.

The second rotation: In this second rotation there were also 4 different objects/things that we had to use to test our skills in gymnastics. They were:

1. Trampoline - Aim: To run and jump onto the trampoline, while in the air, form a star shape and land on the gym mat in the landing position.

2. Backwards roll - Aim: Do a backwards roll on the slope onto the mat with Steven. Landing standing up.

3. Scorpion Hand stand - Aim: With our hands on the ground, lift one leg into the air and pushing off the ground with the other leg and finishing standing up.

4. 180 Degree jump - Aim: Using a jump-pad, take a running start to jump onto the jump-pad and in the air, do a 180-degree turn and land facing the opposite direction to how you started in the landing position.

The third rotation: In this third rotation, we also had 4 different things to test our knowledge and skills of gymnastics. Those four things were:

1. Handstand - Aim: Do a handstand against the wall. Lift 1 leg off the wall for 3-5 seconds and then swap with the other leg.

2. Front support - Aim: To do front support on a mat to gain muscle strength and to be flexible.

3. Parallel bars - Aim: Use the parallel bars to test your muscle strength and flex your legs out in the air. Making sure that our hands are in the middle (not on either ends of the parallel bars) we had a choice of 3 different shapes to do on the parallel bars. They were either: tuck (to simply lift your legs above the ground), L shape (to put our legs our in front of us in a straight position) and Stradle (with our legs apart in the air and holding position)

4. Back, Front, Side Support - Do Back, front, side support on a box. Having our legs on top of the box and our arms on the ground/mat switching supports.

This week we practiced many different gymnastics skills. My favourite rotation was the first one and I found the parallel bars a challenge. This was because I needed more strength to do the Stradle in the air. I could successfully lift off of the ground and the L.

Kiwican | Honesty | Intergrity | Feelings

LI: To use intergrity and honesty

Staying honest is not always easy, but telling the truth or helping a friend to tell the truth must be done. We did a different activity to show people's emotions in different situations like when a lie is told or when you get blamed for something you didn't do.

Patupaiarehe | Maori

LI: To learn about patupaiarehe faries and the geography of Aotearoa

Patupaiarehe are faries that live in forests and shadows. They have magic powers like super strength (strong enough to drag a mountain) and the magic to turn you into one of them. The patupaiarehe we learnt about today live on mount maunganui.

We learnt about Aotearoa and patupaiarehe by listening to the story of Ihenga and searching for information using google maps.

Tuesday 14 May 2019

Reading | Theatre | Play and Act

LI: To increase inference and expression

This week we had to perform our play towards ... My act is about 3 (mainly 2) superheroes that attempt to save earth from ugly, disgusting alien menaces. There is Zoe Superhero, Hemi Superhero and Nigel 'Superhero'. The alien menaces are the Flummox, and the Octoclod.

Kiwisport | Gymnastics | Flexibility

LI: To explore our gymnastic skills.

This week LS1 had our first session of Gymnastics with Steven (Gymnastics coach). In our warm up we did 5 different types of stretches to make sure we were flexible and that we wouldn't injure ourselves during the session. The different stretches were:

1. L Shape Straddle - In the L shape straddle you have to be sitting down with your legs out straight in front of you and your arms straight above your head up high. Have your body in a 90 degree angle for this stretch.

2. Back/Front/Side Support - For the back support you have to have your hands on the floor with your fingers facing your toes and be pushing against the ground to lift your body high. Keeping your feet on the floor, make sure your body stays straight.

For the front support, you need to have your body facing the ground with your hands pushing against the floor. You have to have your body up and straight in the air and your feet holding the other end of your body.

To do the side support, your body needs to be facing one side (left or right) and with one hand on the ground holding up your side, and your two feet holding another side of your body. Keep your other arm up into the air and make sure your straight.

3.Butterfly wing stretch - Put your feet together but point your knees facing outwards. With your legs in the shape of a butterfly, constantly move your legs up and down staying in position with your legs like butterfly wings. If you want, you can try to bend your body and try to stretch your face towards your feet.

4. The Tuck - Pull your legs against your chest sitting down, and put one hand on each of your legs and pull in more (if you can). Then Pull your legs apart slightly enough to fit your head in and then tuck your head between your legs and try to make a small enough body shape as possible.

5. Seal - To do the seal, lay with your stomach on the ground and with your hands straight by your shoulders as if your ready to do a push up. After forming with your stomach on the ground and your hands by your shoulders, push up as far as you can and bend your back as far back as you can and try to push your head backwards to try and look at the area behind you.

Activities

For our activity there were three different stations and 3 groups. We rotated so each group got a turn at every station. There were different things to do at each station linking to gymnastics and being flexible. The different stations were:

1. Supports
2. Balance
3. Roll/Balance

At station 2 (balance) there were 5 different things to do there. There was one interesting equipment that caught my eye. It was the parallel bars. I absolutely hated the bars as I was bad at supporting.

Explanation Writing | Information Report | Procedure

LI: To learn what an explanation is.

This week in writing we had to write 2 posters. The first poster had to be explaining the definition of Explanation, Information Report and Procedure. Including the Structure of the text. The second poster had to be talking about Past tense, Third person, Passive voice and Time connectives. We had to explain the meaning of all of them and when/where in a text (and which text) we use them.

Reading | Theatre | Kebabs | Act and Rehearse

LI: To build vocabulary

This week each group got a new play to act out. Like last week we had to complete the play table mat and summary. It includes a summary of the play and definitions of 3 different words. In the second slide it has 4 lines belonging to a character in the play and who the line is interacting with and the expression the line is using. At the bottom it has information about the character. It talks about things that show your character (portrait your character) and what the character is trying to do in the act.

Kiwican | Honesty | Intergrity

LI: To define what honesty is.

Theme: Integrety
Topic: Honesty
Catchphrase: Speak to me truthfully, that is called, Honesty!

Acitivity
For our activity we played a game called 'Role-play'. In groups, we were given a situation about honesty. We needed to act it out showing how to be honest. We had four groups and had a different situation for each.

1. Cheating (Show an act about being honest about cheating)
2. Change (Show an act including change. Example: At the shop, the cashier gives the wrong amount of change)
3. Wallet (Show an act with somebody dropping a wallet)
4. Broken Window (Show an act with a broken window including honesty)

My group did Change. Our act had to include change/money in the situation. In our act, a group of friends went to the shop to buy lollies. One of the friends bought a packet and after buying it, they got more of the change that they were supposed to get. Confused of what to do, he asked the rest of the friends if he should lie about the amount of change he had or tell the cashier. His friends encouraged him to tell the truth and that he did. They later left the shop after buying them and enjoyed their snack.

Maori | Patupaiarehe and the Mountains

LI: To learn the geogrophy of Aotearoa

Mount Maunganui is a mountain in Tauranga. The Hunua and Waitakere ranges are mountains in Auckland. Patupaiarehe are faries that live on these mountains in Maori myths.

I learned about patupaiarehe and mountains by listening to two stories, The legend of Mauao and The Terehu Wars. I learned where the mountains are by looking on google maps. We created a document telling the definition of patupaiarehe.

Definition:
What is a patupaiarehe?
Patupaiarehe are small pale-like faries that only come out at night because of the heat. They are creatures that helped form Mauao by dragging it into its place. They have magic like no human beng and are small forest-dwellers. They usually can be nice, naughty, or very mean.

Commenting

LI: To blog a positive comment

This week I commented on Farzana's Ad about Apple computers. I thought it was really convincing because of her use of vocabulary in the text. I felt as if I had watched the ad on TV. You can find her blog on the LS1 Site at the bottom of the page, click on the shape that says 'Blogs' and choose from any of the names to comment on.

Basic Facts Boxes

LI: to remember basic maths facts.

This week I did basic facts. I did the speed demon challenge and my time was 2 minutes and 26 seconds. This was faster than my time before but I only did addition. Here is my proof.

SSR Selfie 2019

LI: to summarise and retell a text.

This week I made an SSR Selfie on a Book called 'Finding Serendipity' by Angelica Banks. It is written by two different authors named Heather Rose and Danielle Wood. Since they both love books they decided to write together using their pen name.

This book talks about Tuesday's Bestfriend's mother going missing, Serendipity Smith the most famous writer in the world. Tuesday McGillycuddy embarks on a mission with her dog Baxterr to try and locate Serendipity Smith as an act of friendship. Many different secrets and truths about the world and humanity are discovered and told in this book.

Tuesday learns the truth of her remarkable dog and a true legend about the earth. This book is fiction because it is made up and you can find this in our library under BAN because they are the first three letters of the two authors last pen name.

Reading | Theatre | Group Play

LI:To build Vocabulary

This week our groups had to develop and build our vocabulary and expression in a play. Each group got a different play to learn and had to decide on which role we would take on and how we would act in the play. First we had to complete the first slide about a Play Breakdown as a group.

We had to read the play and choose 6 words from the story to put in the top block that were either interesting or new to us. In the middle block of the first slide, our group had to choose 3 of the 6 words to give the meaning of/define. In the last block we had to summarise the play in 25 words of less and talk about the main characters objective and/or what the play was aiming for the reader to learn.

Maths | Expanding Horizons |

LI: To learn part addition and place value addition

This week we learnt about adding in parts and place value addition. We had to add the amount of meters that Paora had climbed using both adding in parts and place value addition. The first squared piece of paper has the numbers that we had to add for the first task which was having to add the numbers on the first piece of paper on the top of the photo. We did this in groups with 2 big pieces of paper.

The next task we had to do was answering the rest of the equations given to us in this maths story named 'Expanding Horizons' and create a chart to figure out how to answer it using both adding in parts and place value addition strategies.

Adding in parts are taking ones, tens, hundreds, thousands ect. and adding them at a time. First add the ones, then tens, then hundreds and so on then adding the answers at the end. Place value addition, first choose a number to add to and take ones or tens from another number and round it to the number that you chose. Then keep rounding up numbers using the value(s) from another number and lastly add the rounded numbers together to have your answer. Link to Chart.

Writing | Homophones | Sentences | Simple, Compound, Complex

LI: to show an increasing knowledge of how a range of text conventions can be used appropriately.

This week we learnt about Homophones and Homonyms. We also talked about the differences of Simple, Compound and Complex sentences and what they include inside them. First we had to create 1 simple, compound and complex sentence about the same thing. An example of the first sentence we had to make is at the top highlighted in blue, in the middle, and at the bottom which is the first Complex sentence. Next we had to get feedback on our first sentence and write 2 more of each sentence linking to the same information. We had to use Homophones in our sentences then get more feedback on our work.

Homophones
A homophone is a word that sounds the same but have different definitions and meanings to eachother. A few examples: ad/add, their/there, sweet/suite.

Homonyms
Homonyms are words that look the same and sound the same but mean differently. Like homophones, they have different meanings in them.

Sailing | Volvo...Have a go!

This week 18 people went to Volvo Sailing... Have a go to participate in the sailing opportunity that was given by the instructors of the club; Steve, JR and Justin. First they taught us how to create our sail boat and explained what each part of the sail boat was used for in sailing. After we prepared to set off, we jumped into our boats and set sail.

The first activity we did was a race and we had to sail to the other side of the ocean in our boats by following a speedboat with JR in it. Students took turns riding on either a speedboat or the weta (a big sailboat) then we made our way back to shore for lunch. We sailed 3km away and back.

The second thing we did on the sailboats was retrieving toys. Justin used a speedboat to spread toys around the area and we had to sail towards them and retrieve them. There were balls, toy carrots, rubber ducks and water guns.

After retrieving the toys, news spread that if you tip your sailboat (purposely) then you will be able to get the certificate of sailing. After tipping our boat we had to turn it back over and get back onto it properly as soon as possible because of chances at catching hypothermia. We sailed back to shore afterwards and ended the trip.

Thanks to Rotary and Yatching NZ for making this trip possible for LS1 to participate.

Maori | Legend of Mount Manganui | How Mount Maunganui was formed

LI: To learn the legend of Mount Maunganui

This week we learnt how Mount Maunganui was formed by listening to a legend. We learnt that pale white creatures named patupaiarehe and that Mt. Maunganui was dragged to its spot because Mt. Maunganui was afraid to see the mountain he loved be happy with somebody else. The patupaiarehes dragged him to his place, but as dawn arrived the patupaiarehes ran to the forest because they are creatures of the dark though, mountains can only move once a lifetime so Mt. Maunganui stayed in the very place he is now forever.

We searched up different places mentioned in the story and they were, Kaimai, Hairini and Tauranga. Kaimai is a Suburb in Tauranga and Hairini is also a Suburd in Tauranga.
