Hauora as an Athlete

LI: To write what Hauora might help an athlete with.

Our objective for this task was to make a Hauora poster based off what we know of athletes. We wrote what we might think an Olympic athlete would use the four areas of Hauora in their training or during the Olympics.

Hauora is the four walls of our well-being. They are our physical, mental, spiritual and family well-being.

I enjoyed this task because I was able to look at Hauora through an athletes eyes and see Hauora from an athletes perspective.

Netball Competition

LI: To compete in our first competition game of netball.

On Tuesday, 1st of June, the Panmure Bridge Primary School netball team participated in the first official championship competition game. The previous games were grading games and we were happy to be informed that we were graded D section 2 (which is one of the highest grades given).

We faced St Pius X for the four quarters and we were familiar with some of the faces we saw. First, we started by training and practicing for the four quarters of the game. I played as Wing Attack and I played an important role that evening.

The results for the game were 13 scores by 6 scores (13-6), and we won our first game for the competition. Familiar spectators were Mr Johnston, Coach Andrea and parents in the crowd. I played one half of the game (two quarters) but enjoyed my contribution.

HIIT - High Intensity Interval Training

LI: To become physically active by performing the actions to represent a Maori story.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, LS2 travels to the hall to participate in a high intensity interval training session (HIIT).

First, everyone puts their assigned heart rate monitor on and spreads out through the hall. We started off by listening to a Maori story, which was about a Maori god sending a mighty wind into rage.

The movements we did were part of a haka and we did them repeatedly for 5-7 minutes. We did 5 different movements as part of practice and exercise.

I really enjoy these HIIT sessions because they are an opportunity to be physically active as well as learn a Maori story.

Netball Game

On Tuesday, 11th of May, the netball team for 2021 played at the Stone Fields courts representing Panmure Bridge for the first time this year.

First, we had a 20-30 minute practice time to warm up, do stretches and shuttles. The goal shoot, keeper and defence practiced shooting while the other members of the team such as wing defense, attack and center practiced passing and recieving.

We were facing Saint Cuthberts and I played wing attack in the first game, went offside in the second and played wing defense in the third. I believe that we lost by one or two goals, however I really enjoyed this game.

I enjoyed playing against Saint Cuthberts even if we lost, because I am still new to netball and have only had three training sessions after school.

Role of PHN - Public Health Nurses

LI: To create a DLO explaining how PHN impacts schools and the people of the world.

For this activity, we were challenged with researching the role of PHN in our school, and telling others how they help us. The role of PHN also stands for Public Health Nurses who impact our schools and people around them very much.

In case of minor injury, PHN can provide disinfectant to prevent the injury from getting worse, and in case of severe injury, the PHN can be in control of keeping the area evacuated, the victim safe and the ambulance called.

This activity links to attitude because PHN (public health nurses) have to keep a positive attitude to keep others safe. If they didn't it would make their job and others harder, and there would be less probablitity of safety of the patient.

I really enjoyed this activity because before I completed this task, I wasn't sure what PHN meant, so I took the opportunity to learn about public health nurses and teach my audience about their importance.

Tech Reflection - Indian Curry

LI: To create indian curry.

Today for tech, the year 7s made indian curry with Mrs Hecka at Tamaki College. We used a range of different ingrediants like spices and we practiced dicing and measuring ingrediants.

First, we skinned and diced up an onion as well as two garlic clovers into small cubes. We proceeded to put it into a large pot with two teaspoons of oil, one teaspoon of ginger and half a cup of water. Then we cut up the spinach leaves and added it to the pot with half a cup of tomato sauce and different indian spices. Did you know, indian currys often use a LOT of spinach leaves?

While the curry was cooking, we cleaned up our kitchen stations to prepare us for the serving of the indian curry. During the time that the students were cooking the curry, Mrs Hecka (our tech teacher) was cooking rice.

We split the rice between our containers and divided the finished curry between group members, then we were sent to the Tamaki College Cafeteria to eat our indian curry.

I really enjoyed this session of tech with Mrs Hecka because I was able to practice dicing ingrediants, measuring amounts of spices and sauces and being able to proud of what I created.

AFL Lessons with Rebecca and Aundrey

LI: To practice applying our throwing, catching, kicking and passing skills to different games.

LS2 had a session with Rebecca and Aundrey. The year 7s worked with Rebecca and the year 8s worked with Aundrey. Last week, we learnt how to pass by hitting the end of the ball and kick by pointing aiming where we want the ball to go with our toes.

We learned two different catching skills. The first catching method is called the scooper where you have to lift your arms up from your side and as the ball is coming toward you, scoop the ball up to your chest. The other method to catch a ball is by catchnig the ball with our hands in a 'W' shape.

After we practiced these skills, we played Over the River. The rules to Over the River is that there are two islands and a river in between. There are 6 balls and each island start with 3 balls. The players with the balls have to use the kicking method to kick the ball to the other island and at the same time, prevent any of the other teams balls land on their island. Whichever team has the most balls on their island by the time the round ends, that island explodes.

The next game we played was called Corner Ball. We got into pairs and one partner was handed a ball. The person with the ball could not move and could only pass it by hitting the bottom of the ball like how we were taught. To get people out, we had to hit the ball towards their legs. The taggers could not tag other people that had balls.

I enjoyed this session of AFL because I learnt two different catching methods/skills and was able to apply them to a fun game of Over the River and Corner Ball.

Tech Reflection

LI: To test our knowledge on different foods and kitchen related items. >

Today, for our session of Tech we were given three documents filled with activites related to food, kitchen and cooking. This was to test what we know about the kitchen, hygiene and food.

The first document was called 'Welcome to the kitchen' and the activities were related to food and kitchen tool safety. For the first activity, we had to list 5 reasons why keeping our kitchen clean and tidy. The next activity was based around defining different ways to cut food and understanding religious food requirements.

The second document was called 'Healthier pikelets' and these activities were related to understanding the different kitchenware (such as pots, pans and utensils). For the first activity, we identified the different kitchen tools using numbers. Next, we wrote down the safe use for 5 different kitchen tools.

The final document was called 'Colorful & seasonal' and the activities were related to what we should eat more, moderately and less of. For the first activity, we wrote down the 6 different sections of the food pyramid. For the second activity, we listed what we should eat more of, a balanced amount of and less of. We finally seperated a list of vegetables and fruits into their correct column.

I really enjoyed this activity and completing these tasks because I tested my knowledge on food and kitchen tools and I was also able to learn more about safety hazards and the important benefits of hygiene. What I found difficult was listing the safe use for 5 different kitchen tools.

P.E Infinity Tag & Stuck in the Mud

LI: To use our stamina and apply our sports abilities to a game of Stuck in the Mud.

Yesterday, as of every Thursday, the year 7 and 8's were seperated and each group went outside onto the court for a game of Stuck in the Mud.

First, we had a short discussion with the P.E coach about the rules. The taggers are given cones so that people know they are taggers.

To play Stuck in the Mud, the taggers must tag others with a cone. Every other player must avoid being tagged. When a player is tagged, they must stay in one spot and do starjumps until someone high-tens that person.

Next, we played a game of Infinity Tag. In infinity tag, everyone is a tagger and they must try to tag other people before they get tagged. When they are tagged, that person can either do push-ups or frog jumps until someone frees them by doing a high-ten with them.

I enjoyed this session of P.E and learning how to play a new sport as it helps me in the future by improving my knowledge as well as allowing me to play stuck in the mud and infinity tag.

Food Tech Reflection

LI: To make a smoothie and a fruit salad.

Today, our session of Tech for the year 7s was based around food technology and responsibilities with cooking. We made a fruit salad and banana smoothie.

First, we were introduced to our teacher for food tech, Mrs Hecka. we put our belongings and items away in multiple pigeon holes to keep ourselves organized. We washed our hands and put on an apron and proceeded to the kitchen stations. Everyone was put into groups of three or four.

After this, Mrs Hecka showed us where we can find all the tools and items that we will need for food tech. There were different sized bowls, utensils, measuring cups, pots and pans which were all on trolleys. We started by choosing who in our group would wash the dishes, who would dry the dishes and who would put away the dishes.

We started our cooking by grabbing the ingredients, which were milk, yogurt, bananas, kiwifruit, apples, mandarins, watermelon and blueberries. We filled a small measuring cup up of yogurt and used a medium measuring cup to calculate the amount of milk we needed.

While two people took care of the yogurt and milk, another person began dicing the kiwifruit, watermelon, mandarin, bananas and apples into cubes for the fruit salad. We started cleaning as we went so our kitchen station wouldn't end up a complete mess for us to clean in the end.

Once the fruits were sliced, we divided up all the fruits into cups and we continued to fill up our fruit salad cups until there was no more diced fruit left. We made sure our fruit salad cups were colourful and full of various fruits.

Finally, each group took turns using the blender to create their banana smoothies. We first put the milk into the blender followed by the bananas and strawberry yogurt. We blended it for twenty seconds and it was eventually ready to drink. We poured the smoothie into a plastic cup and every group was able to eat their fruit salad and drink their smoothie.

I very much enjoyed making fruit salads and banana smoothies because I was able to use my cutting and cooking abilities to create something that I was happy to eat.

Why it is Important to be Hydrated | Health Inquiry

LI: to understand why staying hydrated is important for our health and learning.

Our Inquiry task was based on investigating the definition of hydration and dehydration, as well as figure out why it is important and very crucial to drink water regularly as part of our health and learning.

Our group started by researching hydration and dehydration and writing down what they mean to us. We wrote the definitions of hydration and dehydration on a google draw.

For our group, hydration means having enough fluid or water ingestion. Dehydration to us means the lack of water intake by a person or living/functioning organism.

On our poster, we began including information about why hydration is important and the benefits of drinking water regularly, as well as why dehydration can be a health hazard and the symptoms of dehydration.

Some of the symptoms are: headaches, feeling dizzy or dry mouth. Not drinking enough water can lead to health hazards that could possibly link to the heart injuries.

Drinking enough water has a lot of health benefits as well as learning benefits. Regularly drinking water can also help you produce more energy and become more active for learning new things and going to school.

I enjoyed researching and learning more about hydration and dehydration because I can use my understanding to impact my learning and health in the future. I also enjoyed creating the infographic poster because I am able to share my understanding of hydration and dehydration with the audience.
