Advertisements | Just Frame It

LI: To make an advertisment to showcase our product.



Today is the gala day and we were making advertisments to showcase our frames. We got into groups of five and made posters and/or brochures. Brochures would be handed out to each class and posters would be hung on school walls. My group also made a video advertisment that advertise our product.



Statistics | Aerodynamics


LI: to use statistical and scientific methods to study the effect of wing span and area on lift


This term we tried different paper plane models, tested and studied their effect of the wingspan and area on lift and flight. The plane model I made was a Sonic Star which was a dart plane. 


We had to throw our paper planes ten times and calculate the average distance. We found the average by adding all the measurements up and dividing it by ten. In groups we made a graph with a trend-line to see if the wingspan had effected the distance of flight by the plane.

Frames | Just Frame it | Enterprise

This term we have been focusing on enterprise, supply and demand. We made photo frames for the school gala day and we are going to sell them. Firstly we would need to make the photo frame designs on our devices then we had to create our accessories and other things for our frames. The steps were:

1. Paint frame
2. Make accessories
3. Add accessories
4. Glue, Glitter and stick on items.
5. Add frame stand

Supply
Supply is the amount of ingredients or products you have to sell. Supply also means how much of your product you have to sell to the people demanding for the product.

Demand
Demand is how many people want to buy your product for the set price. It also means how many people will want your item for any discount.

Athletics Day

On the 22nd of November we did the school athletics day. Each year group was split up into their own colour groups, red, green, yellow and blue. There were 10 athletics games and we had 3-4 minutes to complete each as fast as we could. The teams would compete in each game and at the end of the game a team would receive points and that would mean that the team won that specific game.

We had to test our speed through running and racing, challenge our jump distance and test our throw strength. We did all of these in athletics day. I was in the year 5 yellow team and we started with Frisbee Shoot-out. In Frisbee Shoot-out 2, 2 of the teams were on one side and the other 2 teams were on the other side. One team from each side would go first and they would have to throw some frisbees into a net. Each frisbee would be one point. We did this multiple times for 1 minute then the next team would have a go. For this game the yellow team won and scored 24 frisbees. 

Second was the Lily pad. Two of the teams took a turn each at a time and they would have to jump on the lily pads and once they met they would have to do rock paper scissors and the winner would continue jumping towards the other team on the Lily Pads. A team would get a point once the other team reached the end. This continued until the air horn was blown. Yellow year 5's won.

I enjoyed athletics day because it tested our sport skills and challenged our jumping, running and throwing skills. We do it every year

Inquiry | Coffee Shop | Enterprise


LI: To learn how to run a business.

For inquiry, we played a game called Coffee Shop to learn about supply and demand. In this game, you begin a coffee shop business. We had to name our company to start the day. We had 14 days to make as much money as we could. We started with a balance of $30.

Each day we needed to buy the ingredients for the coffee and change our recipe to however we wanted to make it. Then we could sell our coffee and see the results at the end of the day. We would need to set our price for our coffee. 

In colder days, we would set our price higher because more people would demand hot coffee to warm them up. In hotter days we would set our price lower because less people would want coffee because it would make them warmer than wanted.

Kiwi Sport | Doubles Tennis

LI: to play doubles in tennis.

Doubles tennis is when two players/partners play against another two players. Both teams should have turns at hitting the ball towards the other side. When the ball is served, the person closer to the ball in the air should hit the ball. We practised this by playing in doubles.

Kiwi Can | Respect

LI: To respect others for their differences.

This week we had a discussion about how we need to respect others for how they are different. People have their own beliefs, ideas and customs for themselves and we should respect their opinion. We need to think about what are going to say before we say something, so that way we won't regret our actions. We also learnt about different cultures, religions and customs like Philippine traditions as an example.

Main Activity - Spot the difference
In partners, we numbered ourselves 1 & 2. Number 1 would have to observe the aspects of their partner and then turn around. When number 1 has turned around, number 2 would to change one thing about themselves. It could be something about their appearance.

Number 1 would have to turn around again and face number 2 and try figure out what was changed. Then we swapped roles. This helps us understand the differences of others by respecting and treating them nicely even if they may not have the same beliefs, ideas or taste.

Writing | Narrative Planning | Characters | SettingsW




LI: to identify parts of a narrative.

This week I made had to plan ideas of a narrative story. I planned different ideas and came up with one specific idea that stood out upon the rest, it was a version of the apocalypse but with a twist. We had to make a copy of the draw called writing narrative planner and we had to write the different dates in the story, all the major characters that are going to be in the story and the different settings or places in the story. We also had to write the main problem in the story and what the characters do in order to solve that problem.

Once we finished doing the draw we had to make a google doc and write descriptions for each character and explain what they are like and other assets of them and the things they like. Also including how they look and what they act like as a person, friend and other. 

We also had to do setting descriptions and explain what they are like and whats around them. We explained the different parts of the area and place. These are the settings we are going to be using in our narrative.

Te Reo Maori

LI: To understand and translate more about the Maori language.

In Maori we identified and translated words that related to where something is located or a known place. In the beginning, we were taught how to use a poi like in kapa-haka. 


A poi is an object or a Maori traditional item that helps with the rythm and fixing the flexibility strength. We learnt how to use a poi along with a dance and a song. Next we needed to translate what we translated into another row of Maori words or language that have the 'ia' sound or spelling in it.

Kiwi Sport | Tennis | Volley

LI: learning how to volley.

This week we practised volleying in tennis. We used the forehand and backhand technique to practice our tennis skills. We did this in groups of 4 and practised volleying with the different serves that Coach Peter taught us.

Kiwi Can | Patience | Respect | Communication

LI: to learn how to be patient.

Patience is to wait with no argument, frustration or annoyance. We are focusing on the actions of patience and the consequences and rewards of patience.

Energiser - Snap & Escape
We were in partners & we had to have our right hand straight in front of us with the left hand pointing the index & middle finger. Place it downwards on the our partners hand.

There would be a key word and Mr Semanu would have to tell a short story using the key word.  he said the key word our right hand would have to try and capture the other persons left hand & with our left hand we had to try make sure it didn't get caught by our partner.

Activity - Patience
We were in lines for this as boys vs girls. Mr Semanu would squeeze the shoulders of the people at the back of the line. It would send a chain reaction and everybody else would squeeze the shoulders of the person in front of them. When the person in front felt the squeeze, they had to run to the chair as fast as they could to grab the cone. Results:  Girls- 2 | Boys- 8.

Reading | Comprehension | Novel Study | Newspaper Article

LI: To novel study and complete comprehension task. 
Again, we had to read to our expectations of our books this week. My expectation was to start from 'Mr and Mrs Jenkins meet Bruno' up to the end of 'Mr Jenkins and Bruno'. 

We needed to complete a comprehension task, I chose to 'write and design a newspaper report'. I had to write about the Witches and dangerous encounters and reports about them in the newspaper. 

The Witches will capture any type of child to attempt to make them extinct forever. They have been physically hurting and making children disappear. I wrote about possible which reports and sightings.

Basic Facts


LI: to remember basic maths facts.

This week I did the SPEED DEMON challenge up to 20. I completed all 200 mathematics questions in 1 minute 14 seconds. This was an improvement from last week and means I am advancing on my maths. Here is an image above for proof.

Commenting

LI: to give positive feedback to someones work

This week I commented on Chisa's SSR Selfie. She read the book called 'Phoenix of Destiny'. It is a Geronimo Stilton novel. I found this interesting because I enjoy reading Geronimo Stilton books and this includes a lot of events, twists and turns.

Maths | Statistics | Wingspan | Lift | Aerodynamics


 LI: to use statistical and scientific methods to study the effects of the wingspan and area on lift

This week, we made graphs using the wingspan and distance to find out more about the lift. We had different wingspan measurements, flew the planes and measured the distance. We found out more about lift by how the different size of the wingspan can impact the lift and flight distance.

The type of graph we made was called scatter chart. We first threw our planes and had to measure the distance and we needed to include the measurements in data form so we can use it to create our graph.

Some mistakes have been made, like how all our planes are all pretty consistent and quality but our 14 cm paper plane is different result so we might have thrown differently from the other planes.

We drew a paper graph in our maths books and drew a trend-line. A trend-line is a line that shows the difference of the results. The interpretation is that when the wingspan is bigger then the further the plane will go.

Reading | Novel Study | The Witches | Setting Description | Comprehension Task



LI: To novel study and complete a comprehension task.

This week we had to read up to expectations as normal. My expectation for The Witches book was to read up to the chapter before 'Mr and Mrs Jenkins meet Bruno'. I needed to read to the end of 'The Mouse-Burglar'. The comprehension task I chose to do was to describe a setting or scene from the story book we chose. I chose to describe the Norway Hotel. I included a picture of the hotel. The Norway Hotel is really big and has over 100 rooms. There is a small swing to the side of the hotel and a bed of grass surrounding the building. There are 2 trees, and only two because of how much wood they have needed to cut down to make the inside of the hotel. An explanation is included and the picture of the drawing I made.

Writing | Setting Description | 5 Senses | Figurative Language


LI: To investigate figurative language.
This week we learnt more about showing and telling sentence descriptions. We had to pick a random and tell the reader about the scene for the 'Tell' explanation. In the 'Show' text box we had to try to make the description more advanced by including the five senses and the figurative language types. Figurative language gives the reader a challenge by having to guess what you are talking about and how we would say it literally.

 It also needs including a balance of figurative language and simple, compound and complex sentences. The five human senses we needed to include were: Tell, Touch, Taste, See and Hear. The figurative languages are: Simile, Metaphor, Personification, Hyperbole & Understatement. 

Supply and Demand | Goods and Services | Business and Enterprise



LI: to learn more about supply, demand and business.

This week Mr. Ogilvie invited a childhood friend over to talk about Business and Enterprise. She talked about how she started her business off by scratch and how here original idea was to stop food waste. 


Michal is a small business owner that has been planning for 2 years time. Her business is now 6 months open. She is aiming to be environmental friendly. She is trying her best to help solve the food waste problem & could be distributed to those in need.

Climate Change
Food is needed to survive and is one of the main priorities of survival. The problems come with how food is cared for and produced. Overproduction means 1/3 of food provided is wasted every year. That means 1.3 billion tonnes of food is being wasted! If the food waste goes to the landfill it will have a result of decaying and this produces methane gas which contributes to climate change which impacts the earth.

Food waste
There are 20 million loaves of bread wasted in NZ every year. Wasted natural items and resources. Labour and money is being wasted and technically just being thrown down the drain! That is a big waste because it takes time, money, effort and energy just to put it up into the market. Think about the process of having to make the product and being able to sell it.

Foodprint
Foodprint is an app & business that provides food at low prices instead of wasting tons of helpful food when demand of the product has decreased. The service providers need to cut down the scope to be successful for this. Foodprint is also a social enterprise to help people, businesses and our planet!

Constructing the Business
Naming a business is crucial to making a business and to think about where it’s going to be seen. Will the name fit on screen? What will be shown on the app? Is it catchy? Can it become a brand? The Logo and colours must immediately recognisable so people notice which certain business it is.

About 250 cafes supply the food to meet the costumer demand. Promoting, Advertising, Marketing are things needed to think about in order to grow your business. Hooking in new people & capturing interest are important so that the news of your business will spread and become more popular and noticed.

Maori | Ataata


LI: To understand different farewells in maori.

In Maori, we learned more about the maori language. We learned different ways of saying farewell to people in the maori language. Macrons are added to the words because it changes the maori meaning and the tone of how it is said. Macrons are important in the maori language because it can completely change the meaning of the word. If a Maori word is said or written and it does not include the Macron sound that it is supposed to, it can cause trouble and fuss. Our main objective for this activity was to translate different goodbyes from maori to english.

Kiwi Sport | Tennis

LI: to learn how to serve in tennis.

This week we learnt a different technique of serving. First we had a short recap of what we learned in the past weeks. Then we got into our warm up which was a rally practice.

A rally is when a ball is served and the two players hit the ball to one side then the other. One bounce is allowed before the ball is hit each time it gets to a persons sign. During our rally practice, we learned a different technique on how to hit and serve a ball.

The Serve
We learnt a different type of serve. It was to take a ball in our hand and pull that hand up to our ear and our elbow had to stick out. Our other arm had to be straight and aiming a small amount above of our target. Then we throw and when we throw again, it has to be the same strength of hit again and again.

Shoulder Aim
Shoulder Aim is having your tennis racket in hand and the round part of the racket resting on our shoulder. Then when we serve the ball, we need to throw the ball up and use the racket to hit it. Instead of hitting underarm, we hit it upwards and over-arm. We did this diagonally because we were facing our character across the net on diagonal sides.

Kiwi Can | Respect | Respectful Communication

LI: to learn about respectful communication.

This week we discussed the different ways of respectful communication. We can communicate in different ways, body language, through postcards, gift cards, social medias and in person. 

Our activity was called 'Keep it going'. The year 5's were split into 2 groups and a line of cones stood in the middle. The Kiwi Can leaders would play some music through a speaker and we would have to dance until the music stopped. When the music stopped, we had to grab one cone and put it on top of our head. The people that didn't get a cone or didn't dance were out.

2019 Manaiakalani Film Festival: Ms Hyperbole & What is Respect?

I watched Ms Hyperbole from Sommerville school. It was very interesting because it involved puppets and it was about introducing a new teacher. While watching this I felt entertained because of how they used puppets to make this mini movie.

During the Film Festival we watched a bunch of movies that were created within our manaiakalani cluster. After the trip, we were told to choose one movie we enjoyed at the film festival and comment on it and give positive feedback. I chose the movie 'What Is respect?'. This is an inspiring movie.

I found this book interesting and it is about ordinary school kids going about their day but suddenly something happens. Conrad finds a man leaping towards him from the bushes, he founds out many secrets from this man, some that gave him the fright of his life.

Inquiry | Supply & Demand




LI: What is supply and demand

This week we learnt what supply and demand is. We played a business game in groups of 3 to understand more about supply, demand, price, income and stock. To play the game, we are given a product and that product is what we are selling. My group got pies. 

We started with a balance of 50 dollars and decided how many pies we were going to make to start the business. 1 pie cost 4 dollars to make. Once we made the pies we had to do the maths and find out how many dollars it cost in total to make all the pies. 

We had to figure out which price we wanted to sell the pies from 2, 5 or 10 dollars. If we chose 2 dollars we had to role a 20 sided dice to see how many people would buy the product. If we chose 5 dollars we would roll a 12 sided dice and 10 dollars would mean we rolled a 6 sided dice. Then we added up the money. Example: We sold 10 pies for 2 dollars and 11 people bought it. 2x11 is 22. 22 plus the current amount of money is our balance. This continued for two rounds.

Maths | Aerodynamics | Origami Planes | Plane Study



LI: to use statistical and scientific methods to study the effect of wingspan and area on lift.

For Term 4 we are studying aerodynamics. We learnt what variables are as well as independent and dependent variables.

Our task this week was to create 12 paper/origami planes focusing on one cretain design and studying each aspect of the design and which part of the paper planes are important and how they affect launch and flight.

A variable is a feature of an object that can be changed between multiple types of objects. An independent variable is unchanged by other variables or will not be changed by other aspects or assets of a variable. A dependent variable depends on another factor in order to be changed.

Writing | Figurative Language


LI: To investigate figurative 

We had to think of a literal sentence and convert the literal sentence to 4 figurative sentences on three different characters that we picked on Monday of this week. We had to do the sentences based on one aspect of the chosen character. We thought of a literal sentence describing one thing of the character and then made a simile, metaphor, hyperbole and personification with what we described as the literal sentence. I chose Peppa Pig, Spongebob and Barney the Dinosaur.

Reading | Roald Dahl Biography


LI: To novel study and complete comprehension tasks.

For reading we had to read to our book expectation. The witches expectation was to read to chapter 11 called 'The Ancient Ones'.  We had to chose a comprehension task to complete. I chose to do an author study focusing on the biography and history of Roald Dahl. In the slide show it includes who he his, his family, books he wrote and quotes that Roald Dahl has said. Did you know that Roald Dahl was a fighter pilot for Roald Dahl?

LI: To learn how to volley.

The warm up was testing and warming up our reactions, a tennis ball was placed in the middle and once Coach Peter said 'Ball' then we had to get the ball to test our reactions. 


A volley is when you hit the ball with the tennis racket before the ball hits the ground. It starts of by balancing the ball on the top of the net and the side that it falls on is the side or the person that starts off the volley. We did this in partners. We had to see how many hits we could do before it hits the ground. If the ball hits the ground on a certain side, the other side or the person on the other side gets a point.

Firstly we had a discussion on what respectful communication is. Our activity was Animal Choir. We were in groups and we were given a type of animal out of pig, cat, dog and tiger. We had to follow the rhythm of the bottle in Mr. Semanu's hand and which ever group it pointed to had to stay their part of the song.

Te Reo Maori | Maori Culture

This week we learnt about why the macron in maori language is used when writing Maori words and why Maori people ask others 'Where are you from?'. W
e had to ask 'No Hea Koe?' to other people in our groups. They had to find the place they were born in and translate that into Maori and as a group answering this document.

Cybersmart | Smart & Legal



LI: To understand the legal use of images.

We are learning about legal and illegal images. Our challenge to complete was to find an image by selecting the 'Insert' option on the top manual on a google drawing, then to press 'image' and search from web. 

Once we searched an image we wanted, we needed to find an image and describe the steps to find the image. This was the first challenge but Mr. Wong added another bonus challenge to our task. It was to attribute the image as well. Attributions give credit to the owner or photographer of the image.
