Kahoot Challenge

LI: To create a kahoot using Maori understanding.

Today we created a kahoot quiz based off one of three categories: numbers from 10 and upwards, classroom objects and feelings/emotions. We created a 15 question kahoot quiz for others to answer using our Maori knowledge and understanding.

The purpose of this activity is to practice answering questons with parts of Maori language and to challenge our understanding of Maori so we can understand where we are at.

I found this activity fun because I enjoy making kahoots and challenging my comprehension skills of different languages.

Duffy Role Model Assembly

LI: To understand how reading can change one's life.

Today we had Marc from Duffy come and talk to us about the importance of reading and how reading can make a big impact on your life.  Although Marc had some challenges in his life he used reading as a tool to get through the hard times. Marc believes that there is only CANs and not CAN’Ts.

He told us a story about a boy named Fred who struggled a lot in school because he read from right to left. Because of this, he was often bullied and continuously moved schools due to this. He began hanging out with people from the wrong crowd and acted out as a bad influence on him. As Fred grew older, he was imprisoned for borrowing cars without returning them. He was sentenced to four years in prison, but this is where his life began to turn.

In prison, he met a teacher who taught him how to read properly over the course of one year of his sentence. He took a ruler and showed him to move his eyes from left to right on the page. When he was released from prison, he struggled to get a job because of his criminal record. Then was he informed that he could have a job opportunity at Bunnings (a popular warehouse company).

He worked his way towards his goal and eventually opened his own business called 'Duffy Books in Homes'. He allows children and people from all around the world to read a variety of different books. He is now married with three/four older children and one adopted younger son.

At the end of the story, Marc revealed that the story about Fred actually represented what happened in his own life. This means that everything that happened to Fred actually happened to Marc. This proved that there is always an opportunity to make a bad situation good and you can always work your way up to success.

I found the words that Marc said very motivating and inspiring because Marc proved to us that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. This story was very encouraging because it was interesting and amazing.

Key Competencies

LI: To compare the Key Competencies we think we will use on camp and the Key Competencies we actually used.

Before we went to camp our challenge was to think about when we might use the Key Competencies as we faced the challenges.  When we came back from camp we looked at this and compared how we thought we would use the Key Competencies and how we actually used them.

I found this activity fun and easy because I was able to look back on my memories of camp and remember when I used the key competencies during my experience.

Kokako Infographic

LI: To create an infographic using google draw that tells your audience facts about the kokako.

This week, everyone in LS2 has been given a set of different challenges based on our camp. For this activity we used our smart searching skills to find information about the North Island Kokako bird.

I found this activity fun and helpful because I learnt about the Kokako Bird and recorded information that I found onto an infographic.

Brochure

LI: To a collaborative brochure that tells others why Kokako Lodge is a great place to go on camp

Over the last week everyone challenged themselves during the sessions at archery, high ropes, kayaking, raft building, camp cooking, pancake race and team building/orienteering. Our group collaborated to create a brochure that shows others why Kokako Lodge is a great place to go on camp.

I found this activity enjoyable because I used my knowledge of my camp experience at Kokako Lodge to create a brochure using my prior knowledge as well as research.

Camp Collage

LI: To create a collage of your camp highlights
This week LS2 have been celebrating our camp. I created this collage to show my time at camp and the activities I enjoyed. To make my collage effective I thought about the size of the images, the angle of the images and I tried hard not to leave any gaps between the photos.

I found this activity fun even though it was short and quick because I looked back on our camp memories and was able to practice making a collage using memorable images.

5 minutes of Camp

LI: To recount a 5 minute snapshot of one experience you had at camp

I can’t do this.’ I trembled on the bench. ‘You’ll be fine’ my teammate reassured me. My legs were quaking as I watched my group member cross the beam confidently. My senses heightened and I could feel myself turning pale as I watched my teammate being lowered to the ground! Shaking in absolute fear, I approached the instructor, still pale.

‘Click!’ The clip fixed itself on my harness and I forced myself towards the ladder. My legs were already quivering from the thought of being a long way high from the ground. As I steadily placed my foot on the first rung of the ladder, I took a cautious step onto the next rung and from there, my legs moved on their own!

All my trust had been placed in my teammates and instructor, who promised to ensure my safety. I moved quickly and didn’t look down at any cost to stop myself from overthinking too much about how high I was! I saw the high beam coming into view as I climbed higher up, still refusing to look down. It felt like the pillar I was climbing on was shaking along with my legs! My heart skipped a beat!

Soon, I had reached the top and looked down on the beam. I knew I was up high, and the thought of humiliation by not being able to complete this challenge stirred in my mind. I started to feel dizzy and it took a lot of my strength to place my trembling feet on the beam. ‘Don’t look down!’ I heard my teammate call from below me. I snapped back into reality. I started thinking about how I was being watched by crowds of people. My teammates, the instructor and a few teachers!

Then, before allowing myself to overthink, I thought to myself, ‘Baby steps…’ as I placed one shaking leg after the other! I precariously made my way to the other side of the beam. I refused to take my eyes from my feet. Before I knew it, I had reached the end of the beam and almost bumped into it! I began hugging the log that secured one end of the beam in relief. I had never been more happy to hug a log before! ‘Alright, now walk back to the middle of the beam!’ yelled the instructor. Hearing that, I froze. My moment of joy was over.

After taking my time to carefully turn around, I clutched the rope that was clipped to my harness. I was a little more confident knowing that the most terrifying part was over. I knew my group supported me, no matter what I did! My insides screamed in terror as I looked down at the small people below me. Gripping the rope very tightly, I slowly but surely made my way to the middle of the beam.

I knew I had reached the middle of the beam when the instructor called out for me to stop. I heard the instructor ask. ‘Would you like a challenge?’ he yelled. I politely declined then he called out a final time. ‘Alright, time to get you off the beam!’ My face lit up with happiness and I was very proud of what I accomplished. ‘Phew, finally that’s over’ I said to myself.

Last week we went to camp at Kokako Lodge. My 5 minute snapshot shows my personal voice and I have tried hard to paint a picture with my words to describe what I was doing and how I felt.

I found this activity challenging because I tried to keep my story brief as well as interesting however I enjoyed writing this recount.
