Descriptive Writing

Descriptive Writing is a can-do activity that helps people practise using descriptive language to describe pictures.

I completed the Descriptive Writing can-do with two of the pictures shown below. I used similes and metaphors to describe the two images.

I enjoyed completing this can-do activity and researching figurative language to use for this task. One thing I think I could improve on is using more complicated figurative language in descriptive writing.

Basic Facts Boxes

Basic Facts Boxes is an activity that challenges others to solve maths problems of all operations quickly. There are two challenges within the Basic Facts Boxes: Speed Demon Challenge and Brain Box.

I completed the speed demon challenge up to 100 for addition and subtraction. I answered five rows  for addition and five rows for subtraction. I got a few of the questions wrong under time pressure. I did this in three minutes and seven seconds.

SSR Selfie

SSR Selfie is a can-do activity that encourages readers to retell a story that they have read, and using detail in their summaries so that the audience can understand and find interest in that certain book.

This week, I have done my SSR Selfie activity on a book called 'The Tempest' by Shakespeare rewritten by Anthony Matthews. This is a non-fiction book about Prospero's (a great wizard) desperate desire for justice.

Reading | Explain that Idiom

Explain that Idiom is a reading can-do that expands a persons knowledge on idioms, idiom meanings and how they are used. Idioms are figurative phrases that don't mean what they say.

This week, I completed researched three different idioms, found the meaning of them and made a script to film a video that shows the usage of each idiom.

I enjoyed researching different idioms and using them in a video. One thing I think I could improve on is challenging myself by using idioms I don't really understand or know.

Reading | Novel Study

A novel study finds out information about a novel or a story, and evaluates that information. 

This novel study is based around the story, 'Matilda'. This story is about a little girl who loves to read, and is incredibly smart, however her own family treats her unequally. This novel study has been done on the eighth, ninth and tenth chapters of the story. 

The eighth chapter is about how Miss Honey discovered Matilda's wisdom and knowledge. Miss Honey went to the headmistress and suggested Matilda should be taught with the eleven year-olds.

The ninth chapter talks about how Miss Honey decides to talk to Matilda's parents about the current situation, and she asks them if they are aware of Matilda's skills.

The tenth chapter talks introduces Hortensia, and talks about Miss Trunchbull's skill in hammer throwing.

Novel studies help the reader evaluate their understanding of a book.

Bronze Respect Badge

For Badge Bidding,  I won a bronze respect badge for having good sportsmanship and the people, equipment and enviroment in Kiwi Sport (touch rugby). 

I enjoyed badge bidding and I am grateful that I have won this badge.

Maths | Multiplication

Algorithm is a maths strategy that looks at the values of the digits in a number and uses that knowledge to solve an equation. Place Value solves equations by using the values of each digit. The Latis Method multiplies, divides, adds or subtracts each digit individually. A fact family is a group of maths facts that uses the same numbers. Multiplication is many groups of the same size.

Using algorithm, an equation such as 26 x 7 can be answered. Look at the values of each digit in the equation and split 26 into 20 and 6 to make the multiplication easier. Then multiply 6 by 7 to make 42, and 20 by 7 to make 140. Finally, 42 + 140 is 182, so 26 x 7 is equivalent to 182.

Take a complex equation like 26 x 17, which can still be solved using algorithm. Multiply 2 by 1 to make 2, and 6 multiplied by 1 to make 6.  Then, multiply 6 by 7 equals 14, and 6 multiplied by 7 equals 42. After that, the answers to each equation are added together. 2 + 6 + 14 + 42 = 442. So, 26 x 17 = 442.

The Latis method is multiplies each digit individually by another digit of a different number. The tens are the top left corner, and the ones are in the bottom left right. Multiply 2 by 1 to make 2 and 6 multiplied by 1 to make 6.  Then, multiply 6 by 7 to make 14, and 6 multiplied by 7 makes 42. After that, the totals are added together. 2 + 6 + 14 + 42 = 442. So 26 x 17 = 442.
